Telemedicine is here to stay and so are the remote interpreters!
According to Multilingual, there is a significant increase in the need for interpreters in the medical sector. Due to the corona virus pandemic and, consequently, traditional hospitals being overflown with patients, telemedicine is being introduced worldwide, as this form seems the only way to maintain both healthy distance and continuity in public health care.
Multilingual quotes the recent FAIR Health report, which states that telehealth appointment requests increased by 8,336% between April 2019 and April 2020, rising to 13% of all appointment requests. Those numbers, of course, apply only to the USA, but it comes with no surprise that similar rise in appointment requests can be observed in all Covid 19-stricken countries. As the FAIR Health report emphasises, there is a great need for interpreters for “limited English proficient” (LEP) patients. Proper anamnesis and properly translated medical records can help prevent the spreading of the disease.
Interpreters are and always will be crucial for health care. No one can ever be sure when or where they can suddenly be exposed to a threat.
